Pamoja Capital was founded in 2006 by John McCall MacBain following the sale of Trader Classified Media, of which John was Founder, CEO, and majority shareholder. Pamoja means ‘togetherness’ in Swahili.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create value through long-term, socially-responsible, global investments across a number of industry sectors, including education, life sciences, information technology, real estate and media and communications.

Our Values

In addition to investing the funds of John McCall MacBain, Pamoja invests the funds of the McCall MacBain Foundation. The fund’s investments are broad but are also consistent with the values of the foundation, reflecting its focus on Education, the Environment, and Healthcare.

Our INvestment thesis

The Group’s investments span all stages of corporate growth, including seed and growth capital. We place special emphasis on investing in businesses with strong management teams willing to co-invest, and on businesses with sustainable cash flow, or a growth pathway to self-sufficiency. We believe that the experience of our managers in operating global businesses, combined with the long-term orientation of our financial resources, gives our portfolio companies a distinct competitive advantage.

The Group adopts innovative structures designed to closely align our interests with those of our co-investors and management.  These include creative approaches to:

  • Direct investments in companies

  • Real estate projects

  • Sustainable and social enterprises

  • Investments in investment funds

We typically seek to undertake investments in the US$5 to US$100 million range, however we have no pre-defined limits on transaction size.

The Group seeks capital appreciation through long-term investments.  Since we are not an investment fund with a limited life, the Group can make investments with a longer expected ownership period than that of a typical investment fund.  Pamoja Capital targets investments with the expectation of owning its interest for the long-term.

Typical investment scenarios

  • Growth capital through new capital issuance

  • Succession businesses where owners seek exit opportunities

  • Roll up / buy and build strategies in fragmented industries

  • Management buyouts

  • Accelerating entrepreneurial innovation through investment and mentoring
