Pamoja Capital comprises a team of investment professionals based around the world, including Europe, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The fund is personally led by John McCall MacBain with support from his team and Investment Committee, including Donald Johnston the former Vice-Chair of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

John McCall MacBain, a Canadian citizen from Niagara Falls, Canada, is the Founder of the McCall MacBain Foundation and Pamoja Capital SA, its investment arm. Since its formation in Geneva, Switzerland in 2006, the McCall MacBain Foundation has committed almost $200 million of grants to fund projects relating to scholarships and education, health and the environment in Canada, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. 

From 1987 to 2006, Mr. McCall MacBain was the Founder, President and CEO of Trader Classified Media, the world’s leading classified advertising company.  Starting with his purchase of three small publications in Montreal in 1987, Mr. McCall MacBain developed classified businesses with over 350 print titles and 50 internet sites in 20 other countries, including in Argentina, Australia, China, France, Hungary, Italy and Spain.  After its IPO in 2000, Trader Classified Media was publicly traded on NASDAQ and the Paris Euronext Stock Exchange.  In 2006, Mr. McCall MacBain successfully sold Trader Classified Media and set up the McCall MacBain Foundation.

Mr. McCall MacBain is a Rhodes Scholar and received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, an M.A. in Law from Oxford University and an Honours BA in Economics from McGill University as well as an LLD from McGill University, Dalhousie University and Brock University in Canada. He was President of the McGill Students’ Society as well as Valedictorian at McGill.  While at Oxford, he was Co-Captain of the Varsity-winning Oxford University Ice Hockey team.

Mr. McCall MacBain currently devotes a significant amount of his time to non-profit activities.  In addition to his role as a President of the McCall MacBain Foundation, Mr. McCall MacBain is  a Trustee of the Rhodes Trust (Oxford, England), and the Mandela Rhodes Foundation (Cape Town, South Africa).  Mr. McCall MacBain is also the Founding Chair of the European Climate Foundation, a non-profit organisation aiming to promote climate and energy policies that greatly reduce Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions and help Europe play an even stronger international leadership role in mitigating climate change.  Mr. McCall MacBain is a member of the Yale Advisory Board of the Centre for Environmental Law and Policy, a Foundation Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, a member of the Executive Committee of the McGill Campaign as well as the McGill Principal’s International Advisory Board.

Mr. McCall MacBain is fluent in French and English with a working knowledge of Spanish. He is an avid skier, ice hockey player and has completed four marathons. He is also a commercial land and seaplane pilot.  Mr. McCall MacBain lives in Geneva, Switzerland with his wife, Marcy, and five children who are in Geneva, North America, and the United Kingdom.

Donald johnston

Donald Johnston is currently a director of the McCall MacBain Foundation and International Vice-Chairman of Pamoja Capital.  Mr. Johnston is Canadian and received his Law degree at McGill University in Montreal. He was most recently the Secretary-General of the OECD in Paris, France where he served from 1997 to 2006. Mr Johnston had to a successful career in politics, where he served as a senior Minister in the Canadian Government, including the positions of Minister of Justice and Minister of the Treasury. Prior to his entering politics, Mr Johnston founded the law firm Johnston Heenan Blaikie (now just Heenan Blaikie) and lectured in fiscal law in the Faculty of Law of McGill University. Mr. Johnston’s particular areas of interest are economic development and sustainable development. Mr. Johnston is fluent in English and French.
